Vietnam E-visa

The launch of Vietnam e-visa 2017

Visa is a prerequisite that you must own if you want to visit Vietnam. Traditionally, you would probably get a Vietnam visa at the Vietnam Embassy before traveling. Fortunately, there is great news for busy travelers since in late January 2017, Vietnam Government released a new standard visa system called Vietnam evisa that is directly attached to applicant’s passport at home. This visa system is used once (single entry) and has validity for no longer than 30 days.

Foreign citizens who want to obtain a visa to Vietnam can apply for e-visa by themselves or through a travel agency or organization which is officially authorized by the Vietnam Immigration Department. The fee for an evisa Vietnam service is paid via an electronic transaction. This fee will not be refunded if the Vietnam e visa application is declined.

Who can apply for Vietnam e-visa?

People who should try out this method are busy businessmen, tourists and people living far from the embassy or having no Vietnam Embassy in their country. You can check out the Vietnam Embassy location in your country by clicking here.

This is an official document which is issued by the Immigration Department to allow one foreign passenger to enter and travel across Vietnam. Nevertheless, the Government of Vietnam has only permitted citizens from 40 countries to apply and receive e visa for Vietnam via the Internet from February 1, 2017.

Updated: From December 2017, Vietnam Government has allowed citizens from six more countries (Australia, Canada, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, and the U.A.E) to apply for Vietnam e-visa, raising the list of beneficiaries to 46.

Benefits and drawbacks of Vietnam e visa online

The Vietnam evisa system is implemented online from any browser and electronic device. Therefore, the database can be simplified and streamlined for the government and Immigration officials.

Vietnam e-visa is more flexible, cost-effective and efficient than the current visa application process. The government can reduce the employee workloads at the embassy or consulate. Meanwhile, travelers can have the flexibility for their travel plan due to the fast-processing time of e-visa compared with the five-day to one-week process of obtaining a visa at the Vietnam Embassy.

By decreasing the hassle relating to complicated procedures of the traditional system, this new type of visa can help the country boost tourism as well as international and local business.

Vietnam evisa system will be suitable for those who plan to visit Vietnam through land/sea ports and yet incapable of reaching the embassy to get Vietnam visa. Nevertheless, for passengers traveling by air, Vietnam e-visa should also be considered due to the following advantages:

  • No need to drive to the Vietnam Embassy or send-off your passport
  • No extra fee on arrival needed (the fee for stamping visa will be included in the Vietnam visa fee)
  • No need to wait in line for stamping when you arrive at Vietnam airport (however, you still need to wait for checking your identification)
  • Drawbacks:

Despite all the above benefits, this new visa still comes with several disadvantages:

  • You only know whether or not your application is approved after three days of processing, and you could not receive an urgent visa if your departure time is just a few hours ahead.
  • Your visa fees will not be refunded if your Vietnam e visa application is declined.
  • You cannot extend your Vietnam visa once your visa is expired.
  • Since e-visa was released in early 2017, officers at some border gates and seaports or even Immigration staff might not be aware of this new visa type. As a result, you could encounter some unexpected problems at these arrival gates. That is why you should check in advance with the airline you choose to arrive to avoid these issues.

One more thing is that evisa to Vietnam is only accepted and valid for 30 days with a single entry. Therefore, if you want to stay longer than 30 days in Vietnam, this visa is sometimes inconvenient because it cannot be extended.
